About Sanford Portnoy, Ph.D

Dr. Portnoy is the Director of The Center for the Study of Psychology and Divorce at The Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology where he is also on the doctoral faculty. He is in clinical practice with Needham Psychotherapy Associates in Needham and Newton, MA where he specializes in marital therapy, marital separation, and divorce. He has authored a number of articles in professional journals and has written and spoken widely on issues of divorce. He is the owner of Portnoy Associates, providing training, education, and consultation on divorce and marital stress management.

Dr. Portnoy is former President of The Divorce Center, Inc., a Massachusetts based consortium of attorneys and mental health professionals who provide pro bono education to the divorcing public. In the last decade he has provided training to numerous lawyers' groups on how to establish more effective relationships with divorce clients, and he consults to attorneys and law firms on this topic. His teaching is based on his synthesis of the research on lawyer-client relationships which culminated in the 2000 publication of his book, The Family Lawyer's Guide to Building Successful Client Relationships (Section of Family Law, American Bar Association. Dr. Portnoy writes a feature column for The American Journal of Family Law.

Dr. Portnoy has served Massachusetts psychology in a number of leadership roles, including as representative to the Massachusetts Health Council and to the Mental Health Advisory Committee of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and as President of the Massachusetts Psychological Association.
